An open-beam ceiling and a queen-size bed. The adjacent loft, open to the floor below, has a double bed and can be rented for an additional fee.
Our history
Every log on this ranch
was felled by hand.
In 1919, Charles and Matilda — “Tilly” — Carpenter bought this homestead for a staggering $2,000, and it took them years to pay it off.
Some of the buildings had burned, so Charles rebuilt them from the ranch's own timber. Each log was felled by hand, skidded into place with a team of horses, hewn by hand, and chinked with local clay.
Then he travelled by horse and wagon to San Francisco and salvaged doors, windows and flooring from the 1915 Panama Exposition World's Fair. Most of them are still intact, and you can see them today in the cabins.
Before the Carpenters it was the Raffetto family's homestead — they kept a little store down the road in Newtown, or “Sunny Italy” as the Italians liked to call it, selling what they raised on the ranch to the gold miners. Two of our rooms still carry both families' names.
Today the ranch is looked after by Jim & Linda Davies.
